Negative NLC observation 23/24 June 2008 between 22:35and 23:35 UT here in the Yorkshire Pennines ( Elland) . Observation was visual (N/E and 10 x 50 Binocular sweeps). Camera & tripod was at the ready but not needed. Pleasant binocular session with sweeping up of Double Cluster , M3, M31, M13 , Delphinus, Sagitta, Brochi's Cluster. Would have been a nice night for an NLC display but was not to be. Cloud slowly coming in from south west but not interfering at all.

Same from Liverpool between 22.00 - 00.45 UT. I did wonder if something was happening around 11.30 UT as the sky seemed quite bright behind some of the cloud but nothing came of it.

Phew I'm so glad it stayed cloudy last night. I fell asleep on the couch around 10.30 and didn't wake up until 9.30 this morning, at least I know I didn't miss anything lol. The last few nights of staying up so late (even when I know I shouldn't) must have finally caught up with me.

It is good to see everyone actually making the effort to observe even when the weather is poor however...
A proper "null observation" is one where the sky is clear or clear enough to otherwise allow an observation on NLC to be made should they be visible.
Reporting cloud/rain etc is actually a weather report and doesn't constitute a null observation because the observer doesn't know if there are NLC there or not since the sky is completely overcast.
Its a subtle issue but in terms of NLC stats it's vital.
I've spoken to Tom about this and he is planning on issuing some guidelines on such things
cheers, Bill.
