Ok I know I ask some dumb questions lol but exactly what does the ISS look like when it passes over. I beleive I might have seen it last night after Paul's mention on the Early Warning thread but I didn't know exactly what to look for.
I was looking at exactly the time Paul said and as I wasn't sure where to look I was switching between all the windows in my loft looking (I have windows on both sides of the roof). I spotted what looked like a very bright star moving faster than a plane would passing over at it's highest altitude. It wasn't a plane as it was just a bright whitish light, no red lights or flashing or anything. I started on one side of the roof then I had to go to the other side and watched it for about 60 - 90 seconds before it disappeared, getting feinter as it went.
I always thought it would be quite hard to spot and would be very feint in the sky.
Did I see ISS, can anyone confirm?
Jo x

I find www.heavens-above.com/ really useful for satellites, ISS, shuttle etc. Just get yourseld a login, set your location and it tells you what you cabn see when. My ragular favorites there have to be the brighter Iridium Flares...

Just checked it and ISS should be visible from uk tonight around 11. The shuttle should be docked to it by then so it could be a bit brighter than usual? Maybe even a photo op with a wide angle shot (hopefully) with some NLC's in shot too?

Well now I know for sure that I seen the ISS the other night as I just seen it again and I knew from the sky map on Heavens Above where to look. My 12 year old son Daniel got to see it too and is quite chuffed with himself now. I searched google for some images of it close up so he knew exactly what he'd seen and he thinks it's soooo cool lol. He says he can't wait to tell his friends in school and has asked me to print a pic out for him. My hubby has no interest in astronomy, NLC's or anything like that and he thinks I'm nuts for being interested, but even he jumped up to have a look! (although he walked away muttering "it's just a light, what's the big deal?". Ah well, at least I have you guys to share my interest with now lol. Jo x

Nice image Mark. I caught them both tonight also. Last night was quite exciting as I caught the shuttle and a meteor on the same image... Waiting for the 00.40 pass. Glad you seen it Jo

The ISS & Shuttle actually looked quite a bit brighter than the magnitude estimate on heavens-above would suggest... I've always been rubbish at estimating magnitudes, but was similar in brightness to both Jupiter and Venus which were both above the horizon at the time. It was distinctly brighter than Vega which it passed relatively close by...
Theres another passage of it tonight 11.25ish and again at 1am ish. Hopefully cloud permitting I should image it again, but saying that it's rather grey here at moment... Saying that it's visible all week at roughly these times so there's plenty of opportunity...

Have you seen the headline on www.spaceweather.com this morning about the ISS? During last nights pass there were flaring visible... I intended to photograph the pass but was a few moments late and didn't have enough time to set the camera up. From here in the West Mids there was patchy cloud and so it was going in and out of view on its pass, I did see the flaring but to be perfectly honest I had a bottle of red last night and put the flaring down to this Imagine my surprise when I log onto spaceweather and the flaring is confirmed ISS is visible for a couple more nights yet, no if thats your thing check it out whilst scanning for NLC's
