An excellent evenings observing, however the gigantic pile of manure a few yards away gave the night that something special! It is truly wonderful to be out standing in a field...

Hi, There may be interaction between the troposphere and mesosphere via "gravity waves" propagating up from jets streams and orographic uplifts but I don't know about a correlation of winds. Every NLC I've personally seen has always appeared to move from NE to SW but the winds at ground level have been coming from all directions. Maybe it's worth paying closer attention to the geostrophic flow higher above the ground. cheers, Bill.

Oooooh looking at some of those pics I think I might have seen something that night. I kept checking out the loft window and at around 2am - 2.30am I saw what looked like big sun rays stretching almost over the house, quite bright white, and I wasn't sure if it was NLC or just normal cloud. It looked alot like pteman's 3rd pic down, but I think the 'rays' where a bit further apart. What do you think? I wish I knew how to take good pics of what I see Jo x

Hi, There were several faint but distinct "fingers" which looked like more whirl type early on but as they developed they got higher and higher in the sky. This one got well up past the Pole star. Tom also got some warnings of rising kp index so we were hoping that a real aurora would appear as well, now that would have been quite a sight. cheers, Bill.

If you're unsure then notes/sketches showing position and structure can then be compared to other reports for verification. Photographs are useful too. This particular display was rather cirrus-like at the times you quote. Best of luck with the rest of the season. Tom

My camera is a 5.1 megapixel Sony Cyber shot. I have a small table top tripod but nowhere to really put it if I'm watching from the loft. The camera does have a setting on it with the mountains symbol but I have no clue how to set the exposures or even if I can set them (I'm not blonde honest ) Maybe I should have a look at my user manual and have a play about with it lol. Jo x
