Hello All, A while back I suggested trying to get some live communications for nlc alerts. Maybe people are now already doing this but it occurred to me that Twitter might offer a solution. (Have I already read this here in fact...?) Anyway, if users here open an account we could build up a user group registry (maybe on the main web page rather than the forum, sorry Tom more work) and people could tweet to the group when they're out observing. I have never "tweeted" before and have no idea how it all works but I have just signed up. I'm @billwnlc To identify the nature of the tweet perhaps it's an idea to put "nlc" in your address somewhere so that it's immediately apparent what it's about. So I may tweet soon.... cheers Bill.

Hi,
Got your email. Yep I thought I'd seen it somewhere.
I think the issue is directness. If those interested follow others and reciprocate then everyone follows the activity of everyone else straight to their mobile phone or whatever.
The map is good to show the extent of a display and it's a good idea to check it out but if one wants the absolute minimum alert I think it's just a tweet straight to a list of followers. A basic alert that activity has (or hasn't) been seen by an observer on a given night.
We'll no doubt see how it pans out over the summer!
I'll pick up some fresh tea bags for this season, see you Saturday night.
Bill.

Yes, I agree it would be valuable to have a direct alert service based on mobile phone use. Anyone have any suggestions on how to go about this? Is Twitter the way? Perhaps a mailing list would do it? Shouldn't be a problem integrating this on the nlcnet homepage.
Time to stock-up on deep-fried nutrition for the long summer nights ahead!
Tom

Hi, After reading through the stuff on the twitter site I've created a list called nlcnetlist This might be a better way than individuals following individuals The list is currently public so you can sign up to it. I think this works by only showing all the followers of the list, the list tweets (our alerts notices). cheers, Bill.

Hi,
After a frustrating and highly unsuccesful evening exploring the Twitter options it seems that this might not be as useful as hoped. Myself and Tom tried to vary the settings but we could not get things to work exactly as we wanted so I'm going to delete the list.
For those inclined (and who may have mobile internet if out and about), putting a post here in the early warning section looks like that's as good as it gets without needing much more effort!
Good to see this years account now open, clear skies!
Bill.

I just remembered that Andre Mueller's Yahoo NLC alert list is still active. This works by using a Yahoo Group which sends an alert email to all subscribers. It's up to the user to then route the email to their mobile phone. Information and guide at: tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/nlcuk/

Following on from these experiments last year there is now a general twitter feed at #nlcnet Also, using a twitter "app" you can log onto the forum via twitter for alerts and updates cheers, Bill.
