National Geographic have just published an article on the temporal variation of NLC at NG link
This is a summary of an article at Research Paper on Wiley online

The paper appears to be freely available.
The researchers are using a LIDAR ( basicaly a laser radar) to monitor NLC from their observatory 24/7. Since they are monitoring 24/7 they have some suprising results about when NLC are most frequent but I leave it to you to read end interpret.
Anyone building a LIDAR ?
