Despite the cloudy forecast last night (June 26/27th) I was amazed to see clear gaps forming at 01.30 BST. There was a long clear strip only 3 degrees above the northern horizon but even so I suspected their was a major NLC display growing due to the unsual glow from the sky. After 02.00 further gaps appeared along the NE horizon were I could see bright cream coloured large scale whirls like tendricals reaching upward from the horizon THROUGH foreground cloud clearly extending above the dark outlines of distant farm houses on the horizon. At 03.00 the sky cleared up very well and this was when I got a shock...extending above my neighbours rooftop were multiple thick, white pillars of intense NLC with dark vertical sharp edged shadows against a background Veil which looled like an ailen aurora. I have never seen structure like this before!
The NLCs stretched from the N - NE sky extending 30 degrees in height and peaking as a bright type 4 spectacle which jumped out of the twilight in high contrast definition. It would have been noticed by anyone who even glanced at the sky. Long bands dominated the NE however an unsual intense white mass of NLCs gathered in the high north. In the 10X50 binos I could see snake shaped waves with snaked shaped shadows, small scale loops with dark centres and large scale whirls all clustered near waves, billows and net-like structure. Just about every type of NLC structure was present including many candidates for the 'unknown' category. Altogether I could see types...I, IIb, IVabc, O, S, P, V. A stunning display which was still parlty visible at 04.00 BST. This is my 19th NLC sighting of the 2007 season.
