NASA have recently published an image of NLC ( or Polar mesospheric clouds as they call them) taken from the ISS above French Polynesia. The image shows the stratosphere as well and gives a good impression just how high these clouds are. Wikepedia states French Polynesia is 17 degrees south which is very near the equator for NLC.
