I stayed up till 1am - much to mrs markt's disapproval - there was low level murk so saw nothing - typical! Even though stars were clearly visible overhead...

You didn't miss much guys to be honest as it was a very weak display and very faint (type 1) but on the plus side the waning crescent Moon was in the same naked eye view with the NLCs. I am wondering when the next large display is going to appear?

I am wondering when the next large display is going to appear? I don't think i'll see them tonight tbh, clouded over here and the satellite isn't looking promising either Are there any trends that govern the visibility of NLC's? For instance traditionally they are associated with times of solar minimum - I can kinda get my head round this, when the sun it is more active the solar wind 'boils off' any candidate NLC's... Are there any others though? What influence does things like the jet stream and the azores high have upon the visibility of NLC's? I've only really been aware of NLC's in the past couple a four years, but some of you chaps here have been following them for a good while longer than that I've always been curious what the method/s is that gets all that water vapour that high up?
