Whilst patiently waiting for it to go dark tonight I put together this gif of an aurora I observed in Iceland this february. Hopefully the file isn't too large to make it load slow, and hopefully i'll be able to post one of NLC sooner rather than later ;D

Very nice work Mark! Can I ask what time period is involved there?
Clear skies,
Paul.

Each was a 15 second exposure shot pretty much one after the other, and there's 20 odd in the gif image. I would estimate it covers a 5-10minute period. Images are on my laptop (but i'm currently on another pc) - i'll take a look and give you a more accurate figure later on this evening tho

Thanks Mark - that's most interesting. I've seen a couple of big auroras here in NI but haven't ever made the animation. Maybe next time!
Clear skies,
Paul.

Absolutely gorgeous!! It's my dream to see the aurora for real and I keep hinting to my hubby to take me somewhere with a good chance lol, but he won't because he thinks it'll be too cold!! What a wimp!! hehe

Nice one! I bet I know which hotel you stayed at, too - I've stood at the exact same spot many a time! Iceland's such a good place to visit, not just for astronomy but for everything to do with relaxation. Cheap to get there (Icelandair or Iceland Express), and nowhere near as expensive as people make out (OK, the car hire, especially an ice-studded 4x4 for winter, isn't cheap). Blue lagoon bathing, surrounded by rain, snow, or any other combination of weather, is one of life's musts. Jeez, I should be a copy-writer for the Iceland Tourist Board! Oh, and BTW, I've seen plenty of aurorae from Anglesey, so travel to distant places isn't essential! J. I was at the Hotel Cabin, about 200metres from the sea front. Coupled with my north facing hotel window I was able to keep an eye out for the aurora and then take a walk down to the sea front with the camera a tripod. We're there again for a week at october 1/2 term, it's a new moon while we're there so there will be nice dark skies if the aurora is obliging enough to be around.
