Between the hours of 2am UT and 3am UT there was a fantastic NLC over Southern England, the display may have started before 2am UT but would have been obscured by tropospheric cloud.
this is my 3rd sighting of NLC now and the best display i have seen so far!
It's a complete fluke I saw them at all, heres the story, Me and 2 Friends were out for a nights fishing, after a few hours in one place with no luck we decided to move to another spot, whilst en route my Friend noticed the sky looked rather bright through the gaps in the tropospheric clouds but we could not say for sure it was NLC.
When we got to our new spot the clouds started to break even more, slowly revealing a magnificent NLC display which started out with bright streaks and eventually became quite a impressive display with lots of interesting ripples and "fish bone" effects.
The display stretched right across the northern horizon and extended to at least 40 degrees above the horizon, I am not perfect at estimating altitude but i know it was well above the level of Capella, some parts of it were so high we weren't even sure if it was NLC! (the main area was definitely NLC though)
The last time i saw NLC i was without a camera so i have been very eager to see NLC again as i now have a camera, last night i took it with me in case i caught a nice big fish and i wanted a pic of it!, well i didn't get my fish in the end but it was more than worth it for the NLC! the pics aren't perfect as i didn't have a tripod at hand and was just trying to rest it on the most stable surface i could find, but I'm very happy i finally have some photos and video footage of the NLC, here is some of the best pics i took.
