Was wondering if anyone knows why NLC does not appear to show up on IR Satellite Images. Given the temperature NLC form at you would have thought they would be clearly visible in Infra Red Images but I have never found any.

Hi,
Thanks. Interesting articles. I was aware that the Norwegians had sent rockets into NLC some time ago to collect particles but I was not aware that there had been a specific satellite mission to collect data on NLC. I suspect that we in outstation Met Offices were only given access to relevant satellite images. Looking at Meteosat web pages it would appear that the new MSG is multispectral and any data may be kept and used for research purposes.
The particle size is likely to be the reason that NLC is not visible on 'routine' weather satellite IR images.
